Byron Shire Community Exchange (BSCE) is a community based 'energy trading' group who use an online alternative money system. This group is only for residents of the beautiful district of Byron Shire including Byron Bay, Mullumbimby, Brunswick Heads and Bangalow. In the south we go down to Lennox Head, west to Clunes and Goonengerry and north to Wooyong. We are a growing network of individuals who exchange or trade products and skills using a LETS unit (Local Energy Trading System) that we call the 'Eco' (E).

We are now 'paperless' and all our 'energy trading' is now done entirely online with no more trading slips, no paper currency and no registration fees in dollars or 'Ecos'. Byron Shire CES is part of the new Community Exchange System (CES) website which is a global 'interLETS' trading system that allows our BSCE Members to trade nationally and even internationally. Australia has one third of the CES exchanges in the world!

For over a decade we have been called BMT-LETS (Byron/ Mullum/ Tweed) but now that the new global CES website is functioning and the Tweed group are joining the CES, we are rebranding BMT and refocusing as Byron Shire Community Exchange. We can concentrate on a more consolidated identity keeping our connections and exchanges in the shire while still being able to trade regionally, nationally and internationally.

Byron Shire Community Exchange is also nurturing relationships with the local Chambers of Commerce in the shire, starting with Mullumbimby, to develop more involvement from existing (retail) businesses. When this Chamber model is established and functioning we can export it to other shires thus propagating LETS/CES for the widest possible community and business involvement.

In this transition phase onto the web-based system throughout 2009, the new Byron Shire Community Exchange Directory of Offerings will slowly take shape as new and old Members upload their new comprehensive Offerings. You can also upload your Wants and Announcements and start Groups. There is a Forum too!

As of April 2009 we are delighted to make registering with Byron Shire Community Exchange completely 'fee-free'! Now, there are no more annual fees in dollars or in Ecos except for a flat 4% transaction levy paid in Ecos. Now when you register - it's for life!! For our purposes 20 Ecos or 20 LETS units is written like this: E20. Australian dollars are written like this: $20.

We look forward to utilising emails and websites to eliminate the use of paper and the costs of postage which is better for everyone and the environment. All it takes is an up-to-date email address (like Gmail). Sign up your friends and start a trading group!
